How many of you out there have ever felt guilty because you don’t read to your kids every day?  Sure, it’s easy when they’re little and can’t read on their own anyway.  Picture books are short and sweet.  As kids get older, though, it’s a lot harder to consistently find time to read to them, especially if you want to read books that have more than twenty-ish pages.  I’ve “started” lots of books with my kids, but have only ever finished one “big” book with them.  However, I think I’ve found a way to fix this problem . . .

I read to them while they eat breakfast!  At this point, my kids all eat breakfast together most days.  Since it is highly unlikely that breakfast time will be interrupted by piano lessons or soccer practice, I think this time is safe.  Not only is this a great time when my kids are pretty well always available, having a story to listen to keeps them interested in something besides torturing each other.  I call that a major win!  Currently, we are reading The Great Brain by John D. Fitzgerald, and we’re loving it!

If you haven’t read this book, you ought to!  It’s been one of my favorites since I was a kid.  The story is written from the perspective of the author himself as a young boy.  Known as J.D., he hero-worships his older brother, Tom, and Tom’s great brain.  Tom’s great brain is great at inventing business ventures and solving mysteries.  With Tom in the lead, J.D. finds himself caught up in all sorts of adventures.  I don’t want to give anything away, but trust me, this book has a little bit of everything in it.  You will laugh, you will find suspense, and ultimately you will learn to love the characters.

I hope you get a chance to check this one out!  You won’t regret it!

Happy Reading!
