So . . . this book is a novel, but a novel that is meant to teach something.  The author, Jocko Willink is a retired Navy SEAL, and he uses the things he learned during his service  as a SEAL to teach kids how to stand up for themselves.

Way of the Warrior Kid CoverThe story starts out with our hero, Marc’s, last day of Fifth grade.  Over the course of his fifth grade experience, Marc has had some challenges.  He struggled with math, was forced to survive school lunch, and, worst of all, was forced to face the fact that he was pretty weak.  Gym class was misery, even the field trips were ruined because Marc couldn’t swim.  To top it all off . . . this story has a bully.  Kenny Williamson aka “King of the Jungle Gym”.

Marc is looking forward to his summer break, for obvious reasons, but things turn out even better than he expected.  It turns out that Marc has an uncle who is also a Navy SEAL.  It also turns out that said uncle is coming to stay with Marc’s family for the summer.  From day one of Uncle Jake’s visit, things start to change for Marc.

Uncle Jake is going to change Marc from a “normal kid” to a “Warrior Kid”.  Becoming a warrior takes lots of hard work . . . from push-ups to eating right, to studying hard.

Like I said, though, this book is more than a fun story.  It’s a blueprint for anyone who wants to follow Marc’s example.  Do you know anyone who’s ready to become a “Warrior Kid?”  If so, send this book their way!
