I don’t know what things are like where you live, but the view out my window today is cloudy and gray.  The wind is blowing, and there are patches of snow on the ground.  It’s the kind of day that keeps me inside, dreaming of warmth and sunshine.  Days like this are great for snuggling in blankets, reading books, or maybe a crafty creation?  If you’re looking for a quick project, how about making a hooded bath towel?

Recommended Tools:

  • Self-healing cutting mat.  I LOVE my Olfa mat!
  • Cutting ruler . . . again, I LOVE my Olfa ruler!
  • Rotary blade
  • Straight pins
  • Seam gauge

Other Supplies:

  • 1 Bath Towel
  • 1 Hand Towel – for the hood (One hand towel will actually make 2 hoods . . . just FYI)
  • Thread

Have everything you need?  Let’s get started!

This step could be labeled “optional”, but a cuff on the hood really adds a nice touch.  It’s pretty simple . . . Fold one edge of the hand towel over 1.5 – 2 inches.  Use the seam gauge to make sure your cuff is even all the way across.  Pin everything down, and sew the cuff in place!

Once your cuff is sewn, you’re ready to cut off the “extra” hand towel and prep your hood.  Using your Olfa ruler and cutting mat, lay out the hand towel, and measure 8 inches from the cuff.  This is where the greatness of your ruler and rotary cutter come in!  Line your ruler up 8 inches from the cuff, and use the rotary cutter to cut a perfectly straight line along the edge of the ruler.

You will be left with an 8 inch wide piece of towel with a cuff on one of the long ends.  The cuff will eventually be on the outside of the hood, which means that the cuffed side is the “right” side.  Fold the hood in half, with the cuff-side together, and sew along the opposite edge to make the “back” of the hood.

To finalize your hood, fold your hood into a triangle shape.  The cuff will make the base of the triangle, and the back seam you just sewed will stretch from the center of the base to the point of the triangle.  Keep the cuff side inside!

Using your rotary cutter, ruler and mat, cut off 1.25 inches of the tip of the triangle.  Sew along the edge you cut to close things off.  Turn your hood so the cuff side is out, and you will have a lovely, completed hood.

All that’s left is to attach the hood to the bath towel.  You want your hood to be centered along one of the long edges of the bath towel, so the obvious first step is to find the center of one of the long edges of the bath towel and mark it.

With right sides together, pin the base of the hood to the bath towel, matching the back seam of the hood to the center of the towel.  After pinning the hood to the towel, sew it in place.

There you have it, a fantastic project for a cold, gray day that will come in handy when bath time rolls around, especially if you have a little person to wrap up in it!

No, this isn’t a life-changing creation, but it is a little thing that can make life a little more pleasant.

Enjoy!
